Marielena Hincapie at the Supreme Court

Last year I photographed Marielena Hincapié for a regular client of mine, Northeastern Law School. Hincapié, is director of the National Immigration Law Center, which represents the interests of low-income immigrants in the US.

My portrait of her in front of the Supreme Court was used in Northeastern's law school magazine, and then published again recently in a "People en Español" issue with profiles of the 25 most powerful latina women.

Faces of Colombia

A few years ago, I found myself sitting on a park bench in Parque Bolivar, a large town square in Medellin, Colombia. As I sipped scorching hot coffee from a thin plastic cup, an endless parade of fascinating characters passed by me. Businessmen clutched their briefcases, priests and nuns headed towards the cathedral, musicians serenaded couples, street kids picked through the trash, prostitutes eyed potential clients and young families ate ice cream. It was the good, the bad and the ugly of Medellin concentrated into a square block with free seating and ample snacks.

Photography is like a moment, an instant. You need a half-second to get the photo. So it's good to capture people when they are themselves.

About Dennis


Dennis is a veteran portrait and headshot photographer who has has worked for the Washington Post, New York Times, American Red Cross, JP Morgan and many others. His portrait subjects have included everyone from Vice President Joe Biden to Pakistani goatherders. Doctors and lawyers, business people and actors, authors and real estate agents pass through his headshot studio on a regular basis. He even photographs the occasional Irish Setter.

Dennis' work has won awards in the international Pictures of the Year competition, three Maryland State Arts Council Grants, an Arthur Burns Fellowship to work at the German magazine Stern, and two Fulbright Fellowships for work in Pakistan and Cambodia.

When he is not making pictures, Dennis enjoys sailing, salsa dancing and making his own kimchi.

Photography is the simplest thing in the world, but it is incredibly complicated to make it really work.
