Earlier this year I went on the road for the American Red Cross. My assignment was to photograph people who had been helped by Red Cross blood transfusions. They would later use my images in fundraising emails and advertisements.

One of my favorite subjects was Hannah, a vibrant 15-year-old from Wichita who has beaten leukemia with the help of over fifty (fifty!) transfusions. She and her family were incredibly generous with their time, and I got to spend a day following her around, photographing everything from family cookouts to shopping trips.

Hot Off The Presses

One of the great things about my job is that I constantly meet people who are taking action and moving forward with their lives. They might be starting a new business venture, applying for a medical residency or taking Match.com by storm. In any case, it is a privilege to meet them at the start of their journey and being able to play a small role in their success.

Fun Headshots with Abovo42

I recently had one of those "I can't believe I get paid for this" shoots with the gang at Abovo42.com. In addition to my usual headshots, the guys at this Internet startup also wanted portraits that showed their playful side. So everyone in the office brought props related to their hobbies -- golf clubs, soccer balls, beer brewing equipment, etc. -which we used for a bit of photo improv.

I haven't worked for anyone else in over 15 years, but if I did Abovo42 would be my kind of company. See the guy in the "Save Ferris" shirt? That's Sean ...

Photography is like a moment, an instant. You need a half-second to get the photo. So it's good to capture people when they are themselves.

About Dennis


Dennis is a veteran portrait and headshot photographer who has has worked for the Washington Post, New York Times, American Red Cross, JP Morgan and many others. His portrait subjects have included everyone from Vice President Joe Biden to Pakistani goatherders. Doctors and lawyers, business people and actors, authors and real estate agents pass through his headshot studio on a regular basis. He even photographs the occasional Irish Setter.

Dennis' work has won awards in the international Pictures of the Year competition, three Maryland State Arts Council Grants, an Arthur Burns Fellowship to work at the German magazine Stern, and two Fulbright Fellowships for work in Pakistan and Cambodia.

When he is not making pictures, Dennis enjoys sailing, salsa dancing and making his own kimchi.

Photography is the simplest thing in the world, but it is incredibly complicated to make it really work.
